Move from familiar words to clearer understanding.

You may recite a surah regularly but want to understand its message. You may be returning to Quran study after a break, or already know the basic meanings and want a more detailed discussion of a passage. Muruj’s online Tafsir course gives you a guided place to begin.

Lessons are explained in English, with Arabic words introduced and clarified as needed. You can discuss the meaning of a passage without having to be fluent in Arabic first. Advanced learners can work with more detailed material when their background supports it.

The aim is careful understanding: what the selected verses convey, how their context helps explain them and what lessons can responsibly be drawn from the recognised commentary.

ALL LEVELS · DIFFERENT STARTING POINTS

A Tafsir learning path suited to you.

Beginner: build foundations

Start with clear explanations of selected short surahs or passages you already know. Learn essential vocabulary, the main message and one or two points to recall after the lesson.

Possible focus: Al-Fatihah and selected short surahs, with the teacher choosing a suitable sequence.

Intermediate: connect ideas

Study passages in more detail, connecting vocabulary, context and themes. Practise summarising the explanation, identifying related ideas and asking focused questions.

Possible focus: a selected surah or theme, with regular review and guided notes.

Advanced: study with greater depth

Explore selected classical commentary, interpretive principles and scholarly explanations with appropriate preparation. Arabic ability and prior study determine which material is suitable.

Possible focus: guided reading and comparison of selected passages, rather than a promise of independent scholarly qualification.

These are placement guides, not fixed school grades or guaranteed completion stages. Share your prior study, current Arabic level and reason for learning Tafsir during your trial.

What will you learn in the online Tafsir course?

Meaning of selected verses

Follow an English explanation of the passage and learn important Arabic terms. Notice how a word’s meaning is shaped by its use in context.

Surah context and connections

Explore the main themes and the relationship between passages. Discuss relevant background and reported occasions of revelation where established, without assuming every verse has a specific report.

Quran and Prophetic explanation

Learn how related Quran passages, authentic Prophetic guidance and transmitted explanations help inform the study of Tafsir.

Faith, worship and character

Study selected passages concerning belief, worship, responsibility and relationships. Connect the explanation with realistic questions from daily life.

Stories and their lessons

Read selected Quranic narratives with attention to the passage itself and recognised commentary. Avoid filling gaps with unsupported storytelling.

Reflection with sound foundations

Distinguish the source-based explanation from your personal response. Practise reflecting on the lesson while keeping questions of interpretation with qualified scholarship.

Sunni Tafsir sources, explained at your level.

Muruj’s course draws on recognised Tafsir works within the Sunni tradition, including Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Tafsir At-Tabari. The teacher selects suitable material and explains it in English rather than requiring a beginner to navigate a lengthy classical work alone.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Selected explanations support the study of verses alongside related Quran passages and transmitted reports. Your teacher clarifies the relevant meaning and the status of material being discussed.

Tafsir At-Tabari

Selected passages can introduce earlier transmitted explanations and detailed linguistic discussion. More demanding material is reserved for a suitable level and guided closely.

A clear reading plan

Confirm the passages, editions or supporting materials with your teacher. Other recognised Sunni sources may be selected where appropriate to the subject and level.

Naming these references does not mean every student studies the complete books, or that every report quoted in a classical work is accepted without evaluation. The scope and depth are agreed in your personal learning plan.

How a live Tafsir lesson works.

  1. Recall: revisit the previous passage and clarify an outstanding question.
  2. Read and understand: follow a manageable passage, its key words and English explanation.
  3. Explore: discuss relevant context and selected commentary at your level.
  4. Check understanding: summarise the message in your own words and distinguish explanation from personal reflection.
  5. Take a small next step: agree a short reading, recall question or reflection to revisit.

For example, a beginner studying Al-Fatihah might work on its overall message, a few important words and how its meanings relate to prayer. An advanced learner may study selected commentary more closely. The same surah can therefore be studied at different depths.

Progress beyond simply finishing pages

Useful progress includes explaining a passage accurately, remembering its central message, identifying a relevant source and recognising when a question needs further study. Short oral questions, summaries and review can help the teacher decide what comes next.

Tafsir, translation, Arabic and Tajweed: choose the right goal.

Your priorityA suitable learning focus

These subjects can support each other, but they are not interchangeable. Reading a translation or learning vocabulary alone does not provide the qualifications for independent interpretation or issuing religious rulings.

No. Beginners can learn through English explanations. Direct study of advanced Arabic commentary requires additional language preparation, which the teacher will discuss with you.

Can I choose a surah or theme?

Share your preference during the trial. The teacher will discuss a suitable sequence and scope rather than assuming every student needs the same starting passage.

Can younger learners join?

Tell Muruj the learner’s age and current knowledge. Explanations and tasks can be adapted, and the team will confirm an appropriate teacher and plan.

Is Tafsir the same as translation?

No. A translation conveys meanings in another language. Tafsir explains the text through relevant language, context and recognised sources, with greater detail where needed.
