Qiraah
A canonical reading attributed to a recognised imam of recitation, such as the reading of Asim. Qiraat are transmitted readings, not a choice of melody or imitation of a famous reciter’s voice.
MURUJ AL-QURAN ACADEMY · ADVANCED QURAN STUDY
Study the ten canonical Quranic readings through Ash-Shatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah, or progress to the wider transmission routes of Tayyibat An-Nashr. Muruj’s live one-to-one Qiraat classes connect the principles you study with the recitation your teacher hears and corrects.
Begin with an assessment of your current riwayah, Tajweed and study goals. Choose a clear route into Al-Qiraat Al-Ashr Al-Sughra or Al-Ashr Al-Kubra, with regular revision and a pace suited to your readiness.

You may recite confidently in Hafs and want to understand another transmitted reading. You may be a hafiz preparing for systematic study of the seven and ten Qiraat. Or you may already have studied a text and need supervised practical revision.
These are different starting points. Our online Qiraat course begins by clarifying what you can already recite, what you have studied and which route you intend to follow. You do not need to choose an advanced stage before speaking to the teacher.
Choose between two distinct pathways: Al-Ashr Al-Sughra through Ash-Shatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah, and Al-Ashr Al-Kubra through Tayyibat An-Nashr. Both concern the same ten canonical readings; the transmission routes and depth of study differ. Placement and requirements are agreed with the specialist.
A canonical reading attributed to a recognised imam of recitation, such as the reading of Asim. Qiraat are transmitted readings, not a choice of melody or imitation of a famous reciter’s voice.
A riwayah is a narration from a reader, such as Hafs from Asim. A tariq is a further transmission route within that narration. Your teacher identifies the route so its rules remain consistent.
Tajweed concerns correct articulation and recitation rules within what you read. An Ijazah is an authorized teacher’s permission after specified requirements are met. Studying Qiraat does not automatically grant it.
If your main goal is clearer letter sounds or correction in your current recitation, start with Muruj’s Tajweed classes. If your goal is formal authorization, compare our Quran Ijazah pathways.
THE STUDY PATH
Review your current recitation and learn the distinctions between qiraah, riwayah, tariq and transmitted aspects of recitation. Agree the starting material and revision expectations.
Study the general principles relevant to the selected readings and routes. Topics may include Madd, Hamzah, Idgham, Imalah, Taqlil and Naql where applicable, always within the specified route.
Identify particular words and passages in which readings differ. Connect each point to its reader and narrator, then practise it in context rather than as an isolated list.
Study the seven readings through Imam Ash-Shatibi’s Hirz Al-Amani wa Wajh At-Tahani. Work on relevant verses, their meaning, the symbols and their application with your teacher.
Study Imam Ibn Al-Jazari’s Ad-Durrah Al-Mudiyyah, which adds the readings of Abu Jafar, Yaqub and Khalaf Al-Ashir to complete the ten through this pathway.
Apply the agreed material through individual reading and, when appropriate, teacher-directed combining of readings. Review errors before moving forward and keep the routes distinct.
The amount of text memorization, method of recitation and sequence of study are agreed after assessment. A brief introduction, a selected-riwayah plan and a complete ten-reading pathway have different requirements.
AL-ASHR AL-KUBRA · ADVANCED SPECIALIST PATHWAY
For advanced students ready to work beyond the Shatibiyyah and Durrah routes, Muruj offers a dedicated pathway through Imam Ibn Al-Jazari’s Tayyibat An-Nashr fi Al-Qiraat Al-Ashr. The text treats the same ten canonical readings through a wider range of transmission routes.
Study the assigned verses, terminology and attributions. Connect the text with the routes being read, using the references selected by your specialist.
Learn the restrictions and relationships between transmitted options within the agreed routes. Practise valid combinations under supervision rather than choosing individual options independently.
Apply Usul and Farsh through teacher-directed recitation. Review weak points and develop the accuracy required for your agreed pathway before advancing.
| Pathway | Principal texts | Study emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Al-Ashr Al-Sughra | Ash-Shatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah | The ten readings within the routes of these two texts. |
| Al-Ashr Al-Kubra | Tayyibat An-Nashr | A wider range of routes for the same ten readings, with greater attention to route-specific details and Tahrirat. |
Bring details of your prior recitation, memorization, text study and any Ijazah already held. The specialist assesses whether you are ready for Tayyibah study or need preparation, and confirms any required prior Sughra study, Arabic comprehension and text memorization.
Muruj has an appropriately authorized specialist for this pathway. Before beginning a formal Ijazah track, confirm the teacher, exact scope of authorization, routes, required complete recitation and assessment method. Ijazah is granted only when the authorized teacher’s requirements are met; enrollment does not guarantee it.
Ask About the Tayyibat An-Nashr PathwayThis reference introduces the names encountered in the course. It is a map of the transmitted study tradition, not a substitute for oral instruction or a guarantee that every student begins all ten at once.
| Reader | Two well-known narrators | Text in the Sughra pathway |
|---|---|---|
| Nafi Al-Madani | Qalun and Warsh | Ash-Shatibiyyah |
| Ibn Kathir Al-Makki | Al-Bazzi and Qunbul | Ash-Shatibiyyah |
| Abu Amr Al-Basri | Ad-Duri and As-Susi | Ash-Shatibiyyah |
| Ibn Amir Ash-Shami | Hisham and Ibn Dhakwan | Ash-Shatibiyyah |
| Asim Al-Kufi | Shubah and Hafs | Ash-Shatibiyyah |
| Hamzah Al-Kufi | Khalaf and Khallad | Ash-Shatibiyyah |
| Al-Kisai | Abul-Harith and Ad-Duri | Ash-Shatibiyyah |
| Abu Jafar | Ibn Wardan and Ibn Jammaz | Ad-Durrah |
| Yaqub | Ruways and Rawh | Ad-Durrah |
| Khalaf Al-Ashir | Ishaq and Idris | Ad-Durrah |
Khalaf as a narrator from Hamzah and Khalaf as the tenth reader are distinct attributions in this table. Ad-Duri also narrates from both Abu Amr and Al-Kisai; the reader’s name matters when identifying the narration.
This is an advanced recitation pathway. A suitable starting point normally requires fluent Arabic-script reading, stable practical Tajweed and reliable recitation in your current riwayah. The teacher assesses these skills rather than relying only on how long you have studied.
Full memorization, Arabic comprehension and prior study may be required for a particular stage or formal authorization. Confirm these requirements during placement. Motivated teens are considered according to readiness; younger beginners should start with Quran reading foundations.
Tell us the riwayah and route you currently recite, any Ijazah you already hold, and whether you have studied Ash-Shatibiyyah, Ad-Durrah or Tayyibat An-Nashr. Recite a suitable passage, discuss corrections and agree whether to begin preparation, selected study or a more advanced plan.
Find My Starting PointA typical study sequence revisits the previous material, explains a focused principle or passage, and gives you time to recite it aloud. The teacher identifies whether an error comes from the rule, its attribution or its practical performance.
For example, a lesson on a reader’s treatment of Hamzah should identify the exact conditions and route, use carefully chosen examples and finish with supervised recitation. A general statement that a reader “changes Hamzah” is not enough to determine how every occurrence is read.
Progress is checked through recitation, recall of principles and application in fresh passages. A steady revision routine is more useful than rushing through names or collecting completion claims.
You can discuss a learning plan without being promised authorization at the start. If an Ijazah is your goal, first confirm the exact reading or readings, the route, the appropriately authorized teacher and the required recitation and text study.
The teacher may require a complete recitation, memorization and additional assessment. Requirements vary with the agreed pathway. Only the authorized specialist decides whether an Ijazah can be granted after those requirements have been met. Paying for lessons or completing a set number of hours does not establish eligibility.
Read about Muruj’s Ijazah assessment and preparationAsk Muruj to confirm the specialist available for your intended route and the language of explanation. General Quran teacher profiles do not by themselves establish authorization in all ten readings. Share any preference for a male or female teacher when booking; specialist matching depends on availability.
Students in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia can request suitable local times. Confirm your city, time zone, lesson length and weekly frequency before enrollment. The free assessment helps clarify the plan; ongoing tuition is paid. Request a specialist-course quote in USD, GBP, CAD or AUD, with all lesson and payment details confirmed before you begin.
Ask About Qiraat Availability & FeesThese introductions can help you prepare questions for assessment. They support your planning and do not replace oral study with an appropriately qualified specialist.
Understand the roles of Shatibiyyah, Durrah and Tayyibat An-Nashr, and what to ask about preparation.
Review a beginner’s practice routine for pauses and restarts with guidance from your recitation teacher.
If you are memorising, learn how to record confusion between similar verses and test recall in context.
Muruj offers both pathways: Al-Ashr Al-Sughra through Ash-Shatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah, and Al-Ashr Al-Kubra through Tayyibat An-Nashr. They are separate study routes for the same ten canonical readings. Your assessment determines the appropriate starting point.
The specialist evaluates your prior study and recitation before placement. Confirm the required foundation and any complete Sughra recitation or authorization needed for your intended Kubra plan.
No. The ten canonical readers remain the same. Tayyibat An-Nashr includes a wider range of transmission routes than the Shatibiyyah and Durrah pathway.
No. Qiraat concern transmitted readings and their rules. Maqamat or vocal styles concern melody. Learning to imitate a reciter’s voice does not mean you have learned a canonical reading.
You can request assessment. Accurate, stable recitation in Hafs can be a useful starting foundation; the teacher will check your readiness and recommend the appropriate stage.
Discuss this during assessment. A selected-riwayah plan may be more suitable than beginning the full ten at once. Confirm the exact route and specialist available.
Requirements depend on the stage and goal. A preliminary study plan and a formal complete-recitation or Ijazah pathway are different. Ask the specialist to confirm memorization and recitation requirements before enrolling.
Your teacher will clarify the text-learning requirements for your plan. Understanding, revision and practical application accompany any assigned memorization.
There is no fixed completion promise. Your starting level, memorization, text study, lesson frequency and accuracy determine the pace. Agree initial goals and review them with the teacher.
No. Formal authorization depends on the appropriately authorized teacher’s requirements and final decision. A course completion record is different from an Ijazah.
